Recently, the Algerian Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC) issued a statement on the Internet in response to a report written in al-Habar Newspaper, dated January 3, 2006. In the al-Habar report, the author states that two members of the GSPC surrendered to security forces, while a conflicting report published in the French Le Jeune Indépendant argued that the two men, Abu-Umar Abd-al-Birr and Bilal al-Walibani, were captured in an ?intelligence-based operation.?
The communiqué argues that al-Habar frequently fabricates stories in its ?daily series about the alleged mass self-surrenders? of Algerian mujahideen. These stories, it claims, are inspired by ?security agencies in order to exploit the operation and incorporate it with the imaginary peace and conciliation pact? recently agreed upon in Algeria.
In closing, the GSPC calls ?upon this press to free itself from these vile ways? and for ?our brothers to validate each report that is published about the jihad and the jihad fighters, as the one and only concern of our press has become distortion, causing defeat, forgery and lies.?
