The Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC) in Algeria, issued a statement this past Saturday, January 28, 2006, announcing the ?martyrdom? of Sheikh Ahmad Abu al-Bara?a, ?the Shari?a responsible man? of the group. The statement indicates that Sheikh Ahmad Abu al-Bara?a is the nom de guerre of Zeir Abib Ahmad, the head of the GSPC?s Shari?a Council and considered one of the group?s founders. Sheikh al-Bara?a is eulogized as being as passionate about education as jihad, and was one of the few scholars who ?tie the word with actions? and rode with the mujahideen. Further, the GSPC prays that he may join his fellow ?martyrs? in Paradise, including Sheikh Abu Anas al-Shami and Sheikh Abdullah al-Rashoud, two participants in jihad as part of al-Qaeda in Iraq, and Sheikh Abu Omar al-Seif, an al-Qaeda leader in Checnya.
According to the statement Sheik Ahmad Abu al-Bara?a was killed during a ?severe? confrontation between the GSPC mujahideen and Algeria army on January 17, 2006, in the mountains near the Algerian city of Togabigiya.
