May 8, 2006

The Taliban issued a communiqué yesterday, May 7, 2006, describing their military ?harvest? between Friday, May 5, 2006 and the following Saturday, including the attack on an American helicopter over Konar province in Afghanistan on Friday, killing ten soldiers. The group states that it used ?new weapons? to strike the Chinook helicopter, and the aircraft went down in a ?rocky area?. According to media reports, the Chinook helicopter containing ten American soldiers was engaged in flushing out militants in eastern Afghanistan, and was struck down by hostile fire.

In addition, the Taliban claims responsibility for ?liberating? a central building and killing four ISAF soldiers of NATO in Loger, destroying an Afghan forces? car in Shahr, and killing eight Afghan soldiers in Helmond during a ?severe? battle that lasted for two hours.
