The Information Department of the Mujahideen Shura Council issued a statement from al-Qaeda in Iraq today, June 12, 2006, announcing that Abu Hamza al-Muhajir has been chosen as the new emir of the group in the wake of the death of its past emir, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. According to the message, Abu Hamza al-Muhajir is a ?good brother,? with previous experience in jihad and a wealth of knowledge.
Heretofore unknown, Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, based on his name of ?immigrant,? is a foreign mujahid, rather than Iraqi. Members of the jihadist Internet community have expressed their unfamiliarity with the new Emir of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
