Statement Issued by Tanzeem al-Jihad al-Islami [Islamic Jihad Organization] about the Italian Hostage
In a statement posted to a leading al-Qaeda-frequented Jihadist message board today, February 7, 2005, a group calling itself Tanzeem al-Jihad al-Islami [Islamic Jihad Organization] announces the innocence and impending release of the Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena. The statement reads (in part):
?After the interrogation of the Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena by the religious committee, it was conclusively proven that the Italian hostage is not involved in any spying activity for the infidels in the Country of Two Rivers, and in response to the call made by the Committee of the honorable Muslim scholars… we in Tanzeem al-Jihad will release the Italian hostage within the coming few days.?
Note that neither the provenance of the statement nor the veracity of its message can be confirmed. However, whatever group may have posted this statement, it appears definitely not to be the same group as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi?s ?Tanzeem Qaedat al-Jihad Fi Bilad al-Rafidayn? [the Base of the Jihad in the Country of Two Rivers - Iraq], despite the similarity of the two groups? names. (Relevant in this regard is that the statement was not posted by Abu Maysara al-Iraqi, the Zarqawi group?s official spokesperson.)
