On February 22, 2005, members of a jihadist message board posted their opinions on the fate of Italian hostage Guiliana Sgrena. Sgrena, a reporter from the Italian daily, Il Manifesto, was kidnapped on February 4 in Central Baghdad. According to these members, Guiliana Sgrena should be "slaughtered" in order to teach the Europeans in general and the Italians in particular a lesson as a result of their support to the "crusaders".
One member provides the captors with news stories from around the world, updating them on the notoriety of the case and reminds them "the Italian people have no respect for the Muslims nor honor for our women, but on the contrary, they support the government and the Crusaders and our honor?s profanation."
Another member?s brief message reminds the kidnappers of Italy?s position in Iraq: "My brothers in Al-Qaeda, kill this ugly old woman and do not show any mercy towards her. Do not forget that the Italians, as a people and as a government, hate Islam and the Muslims."
A third member implores the kidnappers in Arabic, English, and Italian to execute the hostage by beheading her; "Chop off the head of Guiliana Sgrena".
A full translation of the messages is provided to Intel Service members.
