Ansar al-Sunna Claims Responsibility for Shooting Iraqi Army Officer
By SITE Institute
March 21, 2005

In a communiqué dated March 21, 2005, the Iraqi insurgent group Jaish Ansar al-Sunna claims killing Lt. Col. Hawas al-Bayati, the director of the Iraqi legal department in northern Kirkuk. Ansar al-Sunna is reported to be an offshoot of the al Qaeda-affiliated group in Iraq, Ansar al-Islam.

In claiming the assassination, the group enforces its belief that the officer was sent to Hell, for ?Hell is the home of all converters who have been killed and have not repented and done good deeds.?

The group goes on to encourage others to follow in a like path, exhalting: ?So, brothers in jihad, go to paradise (as wide as the Earth and the skies) and burn the ground under the feet of aggressors and their soldiers who are in your cities. Do not let them enjoy sleep or rest while your mujahideen brothers are jailed and tortured.?
