The Global Islamic Media Group, an al-Qaeda affiliated Internet site, issued a report detailing the evolution of the use of media in jihad, and how it has fueled the al-Qaeda propaganda machine.
It was their experiences during the Chechen conflicts that first showed the jihadists how important and powerful a tool multimedia could be. Chechen Commander Ibn Khattab himself stated ?the enemy used the media in his war against us, it is time to use the same weapon in our favour.?
Anyone who has viewed the late 1990?s ?Russian Hell? series of videotapes can see how today?s offerings by groups such as al-Qaeda in Iraq, Islamic Army in Iraq, and the Army of Ansar al-Sunnah all have copied this effective seminal model.
The author of this message notes, ?after September 11th, which was in itself a big media hit, more than it was a military hit.? Indeed, with growing access to the internet, these savvy admen fully understand the value of an unrestricted media form and have fully utilized it during the Iraq War.
The message ends with a plea for further funding, ?We ask Allah for guidance, there must be financial support for media and let us be the fuel of this battle to liberate the nation from humiliation, till Allah?s word prevails.?
