The Taliban Claims Responsibility for Shooting Down an American Chinook Helicopter in Konar Province of Afghanistan
By SITE Institute
June 30, 2005

In a communiqué issued yesterday, June 29, 2005, the Taliban Movement claimed responsibility for shooting down an American Chinook helicopter in the Konar Province of Afghanistan. The communiqué cites ?an American official who refused to reveal his identity? confirming the incident, as well as the deaths of the seventeen soldiers aboard the helicopter.

Also, the Taliban claims that a ?new kind of weapon? was used, and ?assured us that [they have] a video of the destruction of the helicopter.? The message indicates that the helicopter was destroyed while transporting troops west of the town of Asadabad, near the Pakistani border.

A full translation of the message is provided to our Intel Service members.
