Militant group requests release of French hostages in Iraq
The SITE Institute obtained and translated a statement posted to a Jihadi website by the militant group, ?Jamaat Attawhid Al-Islamiyyah? [Islamic Unification Group], Omar Al-Mokhtar Brigade. The group issued a statement addressed to the ?Al-Jaish Al-Islami? [Islamic Army] in Iraq, in which they request the release of the 2 French and 1 Syrian citizens, who are currently being held hostage by Al-Jaish Al-Islami. Jamaat Attawhid Al-Islamiyyah stated in their communique, "The French people are supportive of the Muslims? cause in Iraq and Palestine. This [the non-release of the hostages] would have negative impact on the Muslims in France. We implore you to be responsive to our call for a prompt release. We join hands with you in pursuing the Jihad, and seeking martyrdom until we defeat God?s enemies, the Jews and the Christians."
Interestingly, Jamaat Attawhid Al-Islamiyyah has issued previous threats of its own on August 15, to Europe and on August, 27 to Turkey regarding support of coalition forces in Iraq.
