From Iraq to the Scholars of Saudi Arabia
By SITE Institute
July 20, 2005

A message allegedly written by a representative from a group of students in Iraq addressed to the ?scholars of the Haramein Land (Saudi Arabia),? was recently posted to an al-Qaeda affiliated forum, which advises the scholars to ask their counterparts in Iraq about the jihad waged against the ?occupiers,? rather than issuing condemnatory fatwas based on information gleaned from a ?phone call.? The author states that the Saudi scholars ?attack the mujahideen and call them infidels and terrorists.?

The author seeks to justify the jihad by predicating his argument on fatwas issued by scholars in Iraq, that indicate the fight to be a ?push jihad? to remove the coalition forces from Iraq. He maintains that despite ?fatwas legalizing the jihad in Iraq,? the students restrained themselves from participating; however, after the two years of Iraq?s occupation, they concluded that ?jihad against those infidels is the solution.? Further, the message states that it was never the intentions of the mujahideen to fight in the cities, which was deplored by the scholars, but were ?compelled? to do so when faced with death or fleeing as option.

The message concludes with a plea for supplications, and laudatory comments from scholars: ?how much we are happy to find a sheikh talking about our victories.?

A full translation of the message is provided to our Intel Service members.
