Jihadist Forum Discusses the Creation of an “Oil Brigade” within al-Qaeda in Iraq to Strike Iraq’s Oil Infrastructure, Pipelines, and Refineries
By SITE Institute
July 29, 2005

A message titled: ?Oil Brigade Calls Emir of the Mujahideen Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Any Response?,? was posted yesterday, July 28, 2005 to a password-protected al-Qaeda affiliated forum, in which the author argues that al-Qaeda in Iraqi should establish an ?Oil Brigade,? to execute operations targeting Iraqi?s oil infrastructure, pipelines, and refineries, in a similar vein to Omar Brigade?s function against al-Ghadr members (Shi?ites). The author explains oil?s importance in Iraq, its use by American forces in Iraq relative to Afghanistan, and the revenue earned from oil exports, which are allegedly stolen from the Muslims.

Members who entered the discussion agree with the suggestion for the establishment of an Oil Brigade, including one who argues that oil is the most ?strategic commodity? to Americans, creating the impetus for the occupation of Iraq and to be near the oil fields ?in the entire Gulf area and the Arab Island.? Further, the member justifies the creation of this brigade to strike Iraq?s oil facilities by alleging that America, in spite of ?all these losses and defeats,? pay for Arab loyalty with ?Islamic oil proceeds.?

A full translation of the message is provided to our Intel Service members.
