The Brigades of the Martyr Abdullah Azzam Claims Responsibility for Firing Rockets upon American Ships Stationed in Jordanian Ports
By SITE Institute
August 19, 2005

The Brigades of the Martyr Abdullah Azzam issued a communiqué today, August 19, 2005, claiming responsibility for firing three Katyusha rockets at American ships stationed in the Jordanian ports of al-Aqaba and Ilat. The group maintains that America has ?corrupted the earth? and tells that they should be ready to have ?more hits,? besides attacking the Jordanian ?devil? and warning that oppression of Muslim scholars in their jails must cease. The group also called itself: ?Al-Qaeda Organization in Levant and the Land of Kinanah (Syria and Egypt).?

Media reports indicate that two missiles were fired this morning at a U.S. Navy ship in a Jordanian port; however, they hit a warehouse and a hospital, and the Israeli port of Ilat.

As the communiqué was posted to several al-Qaeda affiliated forums, members questioned its authenticity, claiming for instance, that it doesn?t reveal any further information besides what the media reported, contains grammatical errors, does not include any video or photos of the attack, the group does not have a nominated official spokesperson, and no information is known about the group and its leaders. As a result, the communiqué was removed from many of the forums.

In the past, The Brigades of the Martyr Abdullah Azzam issued communiqués claiming responsibility for the bombings at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt on July 23, 2005, and the twin bombings in Cairo on May 1, 2005.
