Al-Qaeda in Iraq Issues Statement Claiming Responsibility for al-Aqaba and Ilat Rocket Attacks
By SITE Institute
August 23, 2005

Al-Qaeda in Iraq [Tanzeem Qaedat Al-Jihad Fi Bilad Al-Rafidayn] issued a statement today, August 23, 2005, claiming responsibility for the rocket attacks upon American Navy ships stationed in the ports of al-Aqaba and Ilat, in Jordan, on August 19. According to the message, the attack was under the ?command and supervision? of al-Qaeda in Iraq leadership, and the statement of responsibility was delayed to allow the perpetrators? to complete their withdrawal. The group concludes that they are continuing their ?fight with the infidel centers and converters as hard as we can.?

It seems that this is the first attack executed by al-Qaeda in Iraq, outside of Iraq.

A full translation of the message is provided to our Intel Service members.
