Tawhid Wal Jihad Changes Name to Al-Qaeda in the Land of Two Rivers (Iraq); Claims Responsibility for Suicide Attack
By SITE Institute
October 20, 2004

On October 19, 2004, Abu Maysara Al-Iraqi, the official spokesman of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi?s ?Tawhid Wal Jihad? Group in Iraq, posted the first communiqué that the group has issued since its pledge of fealty to Osama Bin Laden of October 17, 2004. The statement, a claim of responsibility for a suicide attack in Iraq, refers to the group as the ?Organization of Al-Qaeda in the Land of Two Rivers.? [By evoking the Tigris and Euphrates to signify Iraq, the group avoids the nationalist overtones implied by the use of the country?s name.]

Members of the on-line jihadist community welcomed this new name.

A complete translation of the communiqué is available to subscribers only.
