Ansar al-Sunnah Claims Responsibility for Attacking the Convoy of Iraqi President Jalal al-Talabani
By SITE Institute
August 26, 2005

In a communiqué issued today, August 26, 2005, Ansar al-Sunnah claims responsibility for a ?surprise attack? yesterday on a convoy of Iraqi President Jalal al-Talabani. The message informs that as Talabani?s convoy was traveling towards Baghdad from al-Solimaniya, the mujahideen struck the convoy, and killed ?not less than eight? of the guards and injuring fifteen. Also, the group claims that their cries of ?Allah Akbar? (God is Great), caused a great effect upon the convoy?s members than the weapons, whereas they were purportedly ?terrified? and ?were only trying to flee for their own safety.?

In addition, the group warns that the Iraqi president and those under him will not find Iraq safe from ?the mujahideen hits.?

Media reports indicate that President Talabani was not amongst the convoy when it was attacked, and two of his bodyguards were killed and three injured.

A full translation of the message is provided to our Intel Service members.
