A document was recently issued to a password-protected al-Qaeda affiliated forum and titled: ?Sons of the Islamic Magreb: This is Your Day,? which appeals to the young Muslim men of the North African countries of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia to commit to jihad. The author, Ahmed Abu Abdullah, premises this call on the teachings of Ibn Taymiya, a radical, historical Saudi scholar quoted by Usama bin Laden, who believes that peoples are divided into three sects: the mujahideen, Muslims who refrain from jihad, and infidels. Placing this delineation into the current context, Abdullah states that the infidels are composed of ?corrupt people of American crusaders and whoever help them or allies them,? including the Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, his generals, and soldiers.
According to the article, America has had interest in the African continent since a ?considerable time ago? and the desire has become stronger after the ?beginning of the blessed jihad in Iraq and in the country of the two holy mosques (Saudi Arabia). Abdullah posits that America realizes that its presence in Iraq and Saudi Arabia is not guaranteed and the oil supply threatened, so they have found a great alternative in Africa, ?particular its large deserts… with their enormous oil and gas stocks and large spaces for US army bases.? Leaders such as Bouteflika, then, have thrown themselves to America, hoping in his case that doing so ?would protect his rocked throne and his lacerated regime.?
The author then argues that the Muslims in the Magreb should join the mujahideen in jihad against the ?corrupt people? and Americans in the region, and highlights seven reasons why doing so will be advantageous, including: an opportunity to avenge mujahideen brothers in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, alleviate the pressure on the mujahideen in other countries, ?wipe off the imperialistic borders,? and begin the ?unity of Shari?a under the jihad flag.? For this latter point, the author emphasizes that the mujahideen in all countries are united against America, and ?we are nothing but one brigade of the brigades of the blessed jihad that broke out fiercely with the blessed New York and Washington attacks?.
